Updated: Feb 28, 2025

Did you know that hair loss is a common problem for Australian men? In fact, it’s estimated that around two-thirds of all Australian men will experience some degree of hair loss by the time they reach the age of 35. And while there are many causes of hair loss, one of the most common is androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness.

So what causes androgenetic alopecia? Well, it’s thought to be a combination of genetic and hormonal factors. And while there’s no cure for male pattern baldness, there are treatments available that can help slow down or even stop the hair loss.

Fortunately, scalp micropigmentation can help restore confidence by mitigating the effects of hair loss, giving you the look of a full head of hair!

If you want to have a successful scalp micropigmentation routine, then there are some important steps that need attention.

What is scalp micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation is a new, non-invasive cosmetic treatment for people who have lost hair or are balding. It is also known as “tattoo for the scalp” or "hair tattoo" because it involves the placement of tiny pigments on the scalp to create the appearance of hair follicles.

Scalp micropigmentation can be used to restore receding hairlines with our hairline tattoo treatment, add density to thinning areas with our hair tattoo density treatment, or restore your entire head with our full SMP hair loss solution.

What to do after your first SMP Session?

The following are a few steps to follow after your session of micropigmentation. Your technician will give you more information on this in person, but here's what you will need right now.

Don't wash your head in the first 3 days

It’s important not to wash your head for the first three days after your scalp micropigmentation session. This will allow the pigments to set and adhere to your scalp properly.

During this time, you should also avoid swimming, sun exposure, and strenuous exercise. And make sure to keep your head covered when outside to protect the pigments from the sun.

After the first three days, you can resume your normal routine, but be gentle when washing your hair. Avoid scrubbing or shampooing your scalp too vigorously, and use a mild shampoo and conditioner.

You can start shaving your head after day 4

Start shaving your head four days after the hair tattoo treatment. This will give your skin time to heal and protect your scalp from irritation, plus, give you that awesome shaved hair buzz cut look!

Get back to your normal routine 7 days after your scalp micropigmentation treatment

After 7 days, you can resume all of your normal activities. Just be careful not to overdo it in the early days after your treatment. Give your skin and scalp time to heal properly so you can enjoy the best results from your scalp micropigmentation treatment!

How many Scalp Micropigmentation treatments will I need?

Clients who want their hair to look natural and full should consider the benefits of scalp micropigmentation. These procedures take place over a few days to a few weeks, with each session lasting about 4 hours on average.

Most people will need three treatments to achieve the desired result. However, this may vary depending on the individual's skin type and scalp condition. Your technician will be able to advise you on how many treatments you will likely need during your consultation.
